Nature Watch: The Lego Bird

August 2, 2012 By Vernon Gadson 1 Comment

[David Attenborough voice] This, dear reader, is the rarely spotted Lego bird, a species whose biological structure is curiously made entirely out of Lego toy bricks. When seen, they are typically hidden away inside a child’s bedroom closet beside a Lego box, where they sit quietly and motionless, as always. Like the penguin and the Penguin chocolate biscuit, they are flightless creatures, which is probably for the best: an ill-judged landing would most likely result in a child-unfriendly explosion of dislodged plastic bird parts.

The Lego bird’s rarity is commonly attributed to a lack of interest from Lego constructors in building birds with their toy bricks: typical Lego creations are fighter jets and spaceships, which, I think you’ll find, are naturally more awesome. But one enthusiastic creator of Lego birds is self-titled “Lego Monster” Thomas Poulsom, whose miraculous creations you will see below. In a stunning art project, Poulsom has designed many species of Lego birds, including macaws, owls, hummingbirds, blue tits (tee hee), finches and… those yellow ones with the… wings…

So, please scroll down and indulge yourself in the majestic beauty of these fine, plastic creatures while I go and snuggle up beside a fully grown male polar bear in the North Pole. Attenborough out. [Read more…]

The Cost of Being Batman [Infographic]

July 30, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

I don’t care how old you are, what gender you belong to, where you come from or what flavour of ice cream is your favourite (chocolate, obvs): at one point or another, you’ve dreamed about being Batman. All those cool gadgets, the Batmobile, the costume, an elderly butler waiting on you hand and foot – you’d have it all as Gotham’s caped crusader! Well, except parents. They kinda died in front of your eyes when you were 8 years old, which led to long-lasting psychological problems, which is probably why you dress up as a giant bat at night and go about beating the crap out of people. But hey, look, a utility belt!

However, after reading this new infographic from MoneySupermarket.com, which painstakingly picks apart the true cost of being Batman, your dreams may be shattered in an instant (yay!). It seems that any real-life Batman adventures would in fact consist of popping on a balaclava, stapling a beach towel to your shoulders, driving around town in a rusty rental and thwacking troublemaking teens over the head with a baseball bat (maybe that’s why they call you Batman). All I can say is this: that Bruce Wayne, he’s lucky he’s a multi-billionaire. [Read more…]

What You’re Saying with Your Choice of Drink

July 27, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

What does your choice of drink say about you? According to CollegeHumor, a choice of drink can say a whole lot, and can completely change another person’s perception of you. One particular drink will make you look chilled, another desperate, and another like a sissy girl. In a new post, the comedy site comically guides us through the different social stigmas attached to a whole fridge-ful of different alcoholic beverages, and some non-alcoholic ones too – so, dear reader, what does your choice of drink say about you? ParisTexas: A Splicing of Insects and Musical Instruments

July 25, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

Warning: this post is not for those with a fear of insects. Come to think of, it is not for those with a fear of musical instruments either. The two – insects and musical instruments, not people with a fear of them – are boldly juxtaposed in a spectacularly inventive branding scheme for Copenhagen-based fashion store ParisTexas. The design above, for example, genetically splices a beetle, the kind you’ll find crawling around your backyard, with a trumpet, the kind you’ll find in the brass section of an orchestra.

Denmark-based design agency Scandinavian DesignLab were set the challenge of creating a distinct and unique identity for the clothing retailer that would set a new trend rather than follow a pre-existing one, representing the originality of ParisTexas’ clothing line. “The assignment involved creating an identity that breaks with the traditional thinking behind identities and by extension supports a sense of unique, international exclusivity and underground style,” explains the design agency’s official website.

I think you’ll agree with me when I say they have succeeded – have you ever seen anything like this? Well, not in a David Cronenberg movie, I mean. If you don’t suffer from entomophobia or melophobia (google them), check out the rest of Scandinavian DesignLab’s series below. [Read more…]

Nail-Bitingly Brilliant Fingernail Art

July 23, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

Like so many nervous nellies, 24-year-old Media student Kayleigh O’Connor would routinely chew her fingernails almost to the bone. “I bit [them] so badly that they looked like something out of a horror film,” she says on her DeviantArt page. To compensate, the Birmingham-born nail-biter glues on false nails, but not the kind you can buy at your local pharmacy for $4.50 – they’re ones which Miss O’Connor skillfully sculpts and paints to create ingenious designs. These fingernails, you wouldn’t wanna gnaw at them.

Her designs, which are painstakingly detailed, are inspired by several different sources, from movies to television, music to arcade games, and nature to food. For some time, she would proudly display them in front of only friends and family, but now she photographs them and posts them on her blog for our viewing pleasure. Check out some of O’Connor’s weird and wonderful designs below, where, if you’re cultured enough, you may recognise a few familiar faces. [Read more…]
