Street Stone: Classic Sculptures in Modern-Day Clothing

August 20, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

It’s a comical clash of classic and modern style in Street Stone, the rib-tickling new art project from Léo Caillard. In a stroke of artistic genius, the French photographer felt it necessary to bring a little modern flair to the sculptured masterpieces standing and lounging in the Louvre. In Street Stone, centuries-old statues are glammed up with the fashion of today. The inspired juxtapositions are hysterical and provoke a thought or two about the startling changes in fashion sensibilities over time. But how did Caillard do it?

In the video below, his method is shown: Caillard took some snaps of the statues, then took snaps of his friends dressed in trendy attire (plaid shirts, cropped pants, etc.) and mimicking the poses of the classic stone figures. With a little bit of photo manipulation thanks to the powers of Photoshop and some help from art director Alexis Persani, the clothes of the friends were seamlessly placed onto the stone figures’ bodies. And voila: hipster statues!

Check out the rest of Street Stone below.

ParisTexas: A Splicing of Insects and Musical Instruments

July 25, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

Warning: this post is not for those with a fear of insects. Come to think of, it is not for those with a fear of musical instruments either. The two – insects and musical instruments, not people with a fear of them – are boldly juxtaposed in a spectacularly inventive branding scheme for Copenhagen-based fashion store ParisTexas. The design above, for example, genetically splices a beetle, the kind you’ll find crawling around your backyard, with a trumpet, the kind you’ll find in the brass section of an orchestra.

Denmark-based design agency Scandinavian DesignLab were set the challenge of creating a distinct and unique identity for the clothing retailer that would set a new trend rather than follow a pre-existing one, representing the originality of ParisTexas’ clothing line. “The assignment involved creating an identity that breaks with the traditional thinking behind identities and by extension supports a sense of unique, international exclusivity and underground style,” explains the design agency’s official website.

I think you’ll agree with me when I say they have succeeded – have you ever seen anything like this? Well, not in a David Cronenberg movie, I mean. If you don’t suffer from entomophobia or melophobia (google them), check out the rest of Scandinavian DesignLab’s series below. [Read more…]

Fully-Functional Nintendo Controller Coffee Table

April 16, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

Here’s a must-have piece of living room furniture for all you pasty-faced gamers out there: a coffee table that doubles up as a fully-functional Nintendo NES controller! Thanks to Charles Lushear, the product’s designer, you no longer have to worry about being unable to rescue Zelda once your fingers become crooked from all that intricate, tiresome button-pushing: you can just switch to this gigantic controller and thump your fists or the palms of your hands against the oversized buttons, and voila, your perilous quest continues!

Standing at 18″ tall, 42″ long and 18.25″ wide, the piece (which costs $3,500) consists of maple, mahogany and walnut, has been constructed with dovetail joinery and rests on mid century modern legs. It comes with a rectractable cord that can connect to your Nintendo console when you wish to start playing away, and also a glass covering for when you wish for it to function as just an ordinary (or not so ordinary) coffee table. It’s also a handy device for mythical giants – hey, they like Zelda, too! [Read more…]

Can You Tell How These Logos Were Made?

December 12, 2011 By Anne Burwell Leave a Comment

What do you get when you cross the Death Star from Star Wars with a jigsaw puzzle? If your answer is “the Wikipedia logo,” you either made these pictures or you have a really wicked way of thinking.

A creative anonymous artist made fun illustrations by observing that if you combine different objects, you can get some of the well known logos of products or companies.
