Thousands of readers of the magazine “Empire” participated in the survey “The worst movie of all time”, and the final result was a list of these 10 movies
10. The Room is a 2003 independent film written and directed by its star, Tommy Wiseau. Without any studio support, Wiseau spent over $7 million on production and marketing for the film and failed.
9. Highlander II: The Quickening is the second installment to the Highlander film series, released on November 1, 1991 by Interstar. Upon release, this film was met with harsh criticism by both critics and audiences.
8. The Happening is a 2008 thriller film that follows a man and his family as they try to escape from an inexplicable natural disaster. The plot revolves around a mysterious neurotoxin from plants. The film was nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, Worst Actor (Mark Wahlberg, along with his performance in Max Payne) and Worst Director (M. Night Shyamalan) at the 29th Golden Raspberry Awards. In “The Happening” nothing actually happens.
7. Sex Lives Of The Potato Men is a British comedy film released in 2004. The film is about the sexual antics of a group of potato delivery men in Birmingham. The film was condemned by most film critics for being crude and tasteless. The Times review called it “one of the two most nauseous films ever made”. It was also controversial in that nearly £1 million of public money from the National Lottery via the UK Film Council was used to fund the project.
6. Heaven’s Gate is a 1980 American Western film based on the Johnson County War, a dispute between land barons and European immigrants in Wyoming in the 1890s. The film’s production was plagued by cost and time overruns, negative press, and rumors about director Michael Cimino’s allegedly overbearing directorial style. It is generally considered one of the biggest box office bombs of all-time.
5. Epic Movie is a 2007 American parody film. The film was a financial success despite its extremely negative reviews. Rotten Tomatoes ranked the film 21st in the 100 worst reviewed films of the 2000s, with a rating of 2%. Producers of the movie Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer were nominated for the “Worst Screenplay” award at the 28th Golden Raspberry Awards. Nothing Epic in this movie.
4. Raise The Titanic. The novel was a bestseller. The film, however, was poorly received by the critics and proved to be a box office bomb, losing most of its estimated $40m budget. Lew Grade, one of its major backers, is said to have remarked that it would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic
3. The Love Guru is a 2008 comedy film, directed by Marco Schnabel and starring Mike Myers and Jessica Alba along with Romany Malco, Justin Timberlake . The Love Guru was panned by most critics. The film was listed as the worst movie of 2008 in the New York Post’s Top 10 Worst Movies of 2008 overview. Before the film’s release, some Hindus expressed unhappiness about how Hindus are portrayed, the disrespect of their culture and the bad impression that it would make for those not well exposed to Hinduism.
2. Battlefield Earth is a 2000 film adaptation of the novel Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard, staring John Travolta. Critically, the movie was seen as a disaster and reviews were nearly unanimously bad. The Washington Post commented: “A million monkeys with a million crayons would be hard-pressed in a million years to create anything as cretinous as Battlefield Earth.
1. Batman and Robin is a 1997 superhero film directed by Joel Schumacher. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, staring George Clooney. Even him once admitted Batman & Robin, the schlocky 1997 superhero movie that jump-started the actor’s career, was lame. Now director Joel Schumacher’s steaming heap of cinematic dung has been voted the worst film ever by readers of Empire magazine. Atempting to pick out just one bad scene from Batman & Robin is impossible, and it certainly wouldn’t do justice to just how painfully awful the rest of it is. The film is so dreadful that director Joel Schumacher actually apologized for it on the DVD commentary. That’s right, the man who proudly made 8MM, The Number 23 and Cousins thought Batman & Robin was so bad that it warranted an apology.
We all loved Avatar, Hangover and other top movies from 2009, but what did we actually learn from those movies? Check it out here, its hilarious
Aaron Weiss says
Actually, you’re wrong about The Room failing. Yes there was an initial bomb, but the cult film has weekly ritual rocky horror-like showings throughout the nation.
But yeah, it totally failed as a serious film. Funny none-the-less.
Dave says
Yes, Batman and Robin is biggest fail movie of all time
Jade says
Great list. I will show it to my friends lol
BUDA20 says
I respectfully disagree in epic movie and the happening, these are not very good but not very bad either.
Obesiden says
Epic Movie is by far one of the worst I have seen. I wanted to torture myself after seeing it. I couldn’t agree more.
Barton Fink says
how is it that every one of these “10 worst movies of all time” lists rarely ever include things that are in “all time”? heavens gate is practically on this list because the writer couldn’t think of something else. case in point, heaven’s gate was panned box office wise, but many realized it was ok despite being incredibly long. please stop putting “all time” on lists like this if you can’t really span all time.
JOE says
Gigli is worse then all of these movies.
Jack Vermicelli says
“Even him once admitted”? Really?
The Happening wasn’t good, but was it really one of the worst movies of all time?
And no mention of Plan 9 From Outer Space?
Alexander Burbridge (Come at me!) says
I have several problems with your list. Why is there a movie on the list that recieves rave review on the pic you used? Why are you listing epic movie alone, when you should put them all together. epic, date, scary, super hero, meet the spartans etc. You could have made this blog a hell of a lot easier if you had called it “The Worst Movie Ever” and listed the following.
Snitch’d- If you have not seen this movie. Watch it when you are high as hell. Whether your drug be beer, whiskey, pills, acid, shrooms, weed, crack, meth, heronie, or just laughing. This movie features Eva Longoria before she was famous.
A forty year old cop goes undercover in a high school to break up a drug ring. He ends up breaking more necks than he does drug deals. If this movie were at all serious, it would be heralded for its dark story. depecting the main character and his receding hairline impersonating a teenager and seducing a teenager. Overall Snitch’d is a better bad movie than the rest and a better comedy than the rest.

Thank you for articleI liked it very much
See you
TheForever says
I like how many of the commentators apparently can’t read.
The first line of this list says “Thousands of readers of the magazine “Empire” participated in the survey “The worst movie of all time”, and the final result was a list of these 10 movies”. Whoever wrote this article didn’t choose the movies – voters did
Skip Freethrow says
I also disagree about The Happening. I thought it was a well-done horror movie. I think its true that there are things in nature we don’t fully understand. I know its easy to make fun of a movie that revolves around plants that kill people, but it makes you think.
The Durutti Column says
No mention of Howard the Duck, Troll 2 or Garbage Pail Kids The Movie. These wretched films all deserve to make the aforementioned list.
Roadknight says
Apparently, they didnt see Highlander:the Source. Its so bad, it makes Highlander 2 look like Oscar material
juttinPants says
Horror House on Highway 5 is by far, far reaches of the imagination worse than any of the bad movies on this list. Epic Movie too.
Johnjohn says
No, no…there are many bad movies, yes. But you forgot Graffiti Bridge by Prince. It was the “sequel” to Purple Rain (same characters), but for some reason Warner Brothers had no faith in Prince despite the mega-millions he made them with Purple Rain, so they refused to give him funding. He made it on a $7 million budget…which wouldn’t be horrible for a GREAT director/cast/writers, but this is Prince we’re talking about…and it remains to this day the only film I can’t sit through because it’s embarrassing (for me to watch, for me to think that Prince made it, etc.). Under the Cherry Moon was a much better movie. GB? Not anywhere near sub-par, even.
Kyle says
Wanted should be on this list, it is probably the worst movie I have ever seen.
Anthony says
I’m sorry, but House of the Dead would have to be the biggest fail ever. The acting, script, setting, editing, and plot. All those elements were just horrible. I couldn’t even believe I was watching a movie.
Andrés says
Worst 10 from a guy who KNOWS:
Inland Empire
The Room
troll 2
Manos: The hands of fate
Plan 9 from outer space
Charly días de sangre
Son of the mask
Gigli
Nick Knight
Glitter
Enjoy, if you dare…
James says
I agree with these, but I would also like to add Troll 2 to this list. Despite its title, it involves absolutely no trolls. Combined with less than subpar acting, Troll 2 definitely should receive some recognition
Matt says
Troll 2 – classic for many reasons. One being that they go to a town called Nilbog, which in a dramatic sequence, we’re all shocked to learn is backwards for GOBLIN!!!
The creatures are called goblins. People scream GOBLIN!
No trolls anywhere. The word troll is not used even once in this movie.
To top it off, the people who made it really, really, REALLY wanted it to be scary but only had 18 bucks to make the movie so, yeah.
Definitely deserves a place on the list.
Andy says
Pretty good list, as terrible as Epic movie is Disaster Movie is way worse.
No Sir says
Batman and Robin is actually a fun great movie. People just don’t get it and have jumped on a bandwagon of hate just like everyone is on the “Godfather is the best movie ever” bandwagon. These people would never say that if they didn’t hear someone else say it.
How its lauded as one of the worst ever (the worst??) is beyond my comprehension. America really is made up of mostly retards.
Movies like Epic Movie deserve number one.
Jip says
Batman & Robin is worth watching just for the gratuitous shot of Alicia Silverstone’s ass in rubber.
Squillions says
What?! No mention of Zabriski Point or The Damned? The two worst movies I ever struggled to sit through.
Obamabush says
Nahhh. Ghost of Mars, and The Last Airbender are probably the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Battle Field Earth was pretty horrible too. Pretty much anything M Knight has directed has been terrible except for “The Sixth Sense”
Marco says
You all just s*iting and do nothing. Most of those movies are good and the “Public say this… public say that..” bljah. I also watch the movie that have a low public rating. Why? Cause most of the people are dumpass and if they don’t like it that’s mean the movie have something that disturb they brains (if they have it). Like Battlefield Earth which is very good and sure that only thing disturb You is exploitation of Human. There is more examples but You can swallow it. You can not make an line with pencil on a paper.
Paul says
How is “Leonard part 6” not on this. That movie was so bad that after its production Bill Cosby apologized to the public and urged them not to see it. Bill Cosby also once called “Ghost Dad” a success.
Uecker says
I agree with most your lists. The only one I take exception with is the “The Room.” It’s so bad, it’s good. The others are pure torture. Here is my 10 Worst of All Time list:http://themanfromthegarage.com/?cat=4
Carrie says
The problem with these kinds of surveys is that in order to judge what movie is the worst it also requires you to have watched all movies ever made. So the result will be a bunch of movies alot of other people wont agree are the worst because theyve seen worse.
The worst movie Ive ever seen hands down, and wont even compare to any of the films in this blood is “2012 Doomsday” Its not the new 2012 movie of 2010, its made in 2008 and its just…. you really need to see that movie to believe it.
Lirit says
I don’t know about the other, but I just love “The Happening”
KJ says
I thought “Jury Duty” would have made the list. Admittedly I only saw the first half-hour or so, but that’s about as much as I could stand to watch. Also, I’m surprised “Gigli” and “Striptease” didn’t make the list.
Alicia says
Not going to lie, Batman & Robin was my favorite movie when I was 7. I wanted to marry Robin.
…Obviously not much has changed, because 13 years later, I would not turn down a shot at Chris O’Donnell. Though at least now my favorite movie is Casablanca.
Muggu says
I am sorry to say heaven’s gate is a masterpiece and has nothing to do on this list. Courageous though, like playing russian roulette with one’s credibility. Very hard to tell from the commentary why it’s deemed so bad actually.
ocelot70 says
The Avengers, Dumber and Dumberer, Supergirl, Ghost Rider, Leonard Part 6, Nightmare on Elm Street (2010 version!!). Can’t think of another 4 at the moment, but these are all very very bad films!
DUG says
Sorry but “Humanoids from the deep” is the worst of all time.
theLoner says
Nightmare on elm street was a nice horror movie. Ghost rider was okay – like one time see. Thankfully I tend to forget the gross movies – so no help there.
Alex says
The avengers. Jesus what a piece of crap…
DDL says
From Justin To Kelly, talk about a pathetic and blatant attempt at a cash grab from the “popularity” of the winner and runner up from American Idol….blech!
Bobby says
I disagree somewhat with the list. I happen to absolutely love “Battlefield Earth”
Movies that SHOULD’VE been on the list:
“Pretty Woman”
“Dirty Dancing”
“Glitter”
“G.I. Joe – Rise of the Cobra”
+ both Transformers movies.
ThompGun says
no mention of starship troopers #2 and #3? Those films are so bad they use footage from the first film and try to pass it off as original.
dominic says
There are a few more that would be more worthy. Ishtar, Howard the Duck, any movie that Bill Cosby did, and the first Star trek movie.
Batista says
HULK WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME
Cheyenne Brody says
If you ever get a chance to see the movie “The Visitor” just one word – don’t.
Outside of no discernible plot it has a total lack of comprehensible dialog, and no rationally explainable criteria for the choice of scenes. It is not simply that it is a bad movie, I don’t know that it could really be classified as a movie at all – merely a collection of badly acted and scripted scenes.
DGeneration says
Ridiclous… Epic Movie,Sex Lives Of The Potato Men… etc. ‘Writer of this list’ either has no sence of humor AT ALL or is just a tard. and Highlander is pretty old movie… you cant call it bad if its OLD!
Christopher Chance says
As stated in one of Kevin Smith’s movies “Batman & Robin” is one 90 minute gay joke.
Shadowglass says
One title should say it all “Pluto Nash”…grossing only around $7.1 million on its reported $100 million budget.
Ad Honorem says
I would’ve put 10,000 BC at the top. That film should have come with a health warning. WARNING: VIEWING THIS FILM MAY CREATE FEELINGS OF HOPELESSNESS AND DESPAIR, AND MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF SUICIDAL THOUGHTS.
These feelings would stem from the realisation that the world is not only bereft of any kind of merciful God or deity but that it is also home to specimens of humanity (the film producers and any fans of the film)for whom a eugenics program could seriously be justified.
Avoid this film like an STD.
Don’t say you weren’t warned…
Moonjump says
Patch Adams is the worst movie of all time.
artrock101 says
I’m not going to comment on the films listed, I just wish websites like this would take 2 minutes to proof-read articles.. The grammatical errors are numerous (example from #1: “Even >him< once admitted Batman & Robin, the schlocky 1997 superhero movie that jump-started the actor’s career, was lame.") It sounds like it's written by a caveman. Really pathetic, if you ask me. Do you not know how to spell "attempting"?
