Temporary cinemas became common in Ghana in the 80s because of the video cassette technology. When “mobile cinema” operators traveled from town to town creating these temporary cinemas, they needed movie posters in order to promote the movies. They hired artists were given totally freedom to paint the posters as they wanted, some of them didn’t even watch the movies, and that is why the result was interesting and bizarre movie posters, mostly of horror and trash action movies.
A similar thing happened in Russia where these hand drawn movie posters were made.
