5 Music Video Nominees for the VMAs

July 29, 2015 By Anne Burwell Leave a Comment

The most popular category in the Video Music Award (VMA), Video of the Year, has had its nominees announced and we can tell the task is not going to be easy. The VMAs never fail to deliver hours of incredible entertainment, so we don’t doubt they have some cool tricks up their sleeve, but we can’t deny we’re holding our breathe for many contestants. Whatever your favorite genre is, fear not, you’re most likely represented in the VMAs, since the number of competitors is huge this year. But let’s take a look at the juiciest part, the 5 music video nominees for the VMAs.

1. Beyonce’s “7/11”

You might be wondering what is Queen B still doing at the VMAs. The rest of us all do. Looking at her past performances, we’d say she’s got quite an impressive resume. Not only did she receive MTV’s highest honor possible last year, but she announced her pregnancy on their stage and rubbed her belly to the delight of millions. Still, she seems unstoppable and she’s here to take home all the awards with her 7/11 music video. And no, we can’t deny its coolness and good vibes.

2. Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”

We’re still unsure about what Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” is doing up here. I’m pretty sure when the song starts playing on the radio no one immediately remembers the beautiful video with the dancers and their smooth perfectly synchronized move. And this is what a nominee for the VMA’s best music video should do. Deliver some visual content that is virtually inseparable from the lines, the rhythm and the overall atmosphere of the song. Unfortunately, we fell Sheeran’s video fails to do that, and the wanna be rock song is in over its head in this competition.

3. Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright”

This video has been described as breathtaking and drop dead gorgeous. And we won’t argue with that. Coming to audiences from all over the globe from the hip hop world, “Alright” is about police violence, racism and reaching out for a sympathetic helping hand. All these make it the perfect candidate for this year’s VMAs best music video. Unlike the other nominees, Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” takes on a more serious attitude. While the other artists are having fun dancing, this one is an artistic comment on a bigger picture that more than often eludes us.

4. Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk”

Confession time! We all love this one. We’ve all danced to its hypnotizing vibe. And some of us have even karaoked on it. And why not? It’s colorful, fills you right up with good energy whether you listen to it on a Monday morning on your way to work or on Friday evening, heading to a bachelors’ party. The video is undeniably very good. You have fun only watching the people in it, and we can only imagine how much fun it was to film it on the set with Bruno Mars. Still, we’re a bit uncertain about Mark Ronson’s chances against names like Beyonce and Taylor Swift.

5. Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar’s “Bad Blood”

The last nominee is probably the safest bet to place your money on. Taylor Swift has become very famous in the last year and the other candidates seem easy to surpass by her collaboration in “Bad Blood” with Kendrick Lamar. Of course, this comes at the cost of her integrity. We can’t help feeling she’s gone from the cute outsider to what she hated: the manipulator.

We’ve listed the nominees but we’re still a log way to go until August 30th when the VMAs will be hosted by Miley Cyrus.
