Packing is tedious and time consuming. However, with a little planning it needn’t be as horrendous as one might think.
Here are a few useful tips that will help you pack more effectively without having to take half the house with you.
If you have any other tips feel free to share them in the comment box below.
1. Use quality and specific packing objects
Carton moving storage boxes from a close-by grocery might sound like better idea, but it can end up charging you a lot more than all potential savings. Cheap or broken moving containers are more likely to be mashed, ripped or have their walls give way. Use objects particularly made for moving your belongings for your next shift to prevent destroying your collectibles.
2. Provide sufficient padding
In transportation, your moving storage containers are subject to continuous vibrations, lumps, g-forces and overfilling. If your boxes have excess space in them, your items are at increased risk of damage, retaining scrapes or rubbing marks, and harm in general.
It is good to utilize foam pellets, unprinted paper (or other special paper), towels or bubble-wrap to protect around encased products as well as the top, base and sides of loaded storage boxes.
Be careful that printed magazines can leave some dirty marks on your loaded goods. They are a more economical and eco-friendly choice though, so when you want to use paper, do not use it to cover your belongings directly. Instead, utilize it as cushioning only and wear rubberized safety gloves to protect your hands against scratches or ink from moving your products and the rest of your home during the packing and unpacking operations.
3. Protect storage boxes correctly
Stick some packing tape to seal the top and base of the moving storage containers. Other types of taping may stretch, split or might not adhere effectively to your cardboard boxes. It is best to seal it along all joints and secure both the top and base of the moving containers from corner-to-corner following an “X” shape, to be sure that all boxes are safe during the trip.
4. Begin packing early
You are likely to have a lot on your hands when you are moving to another location and the packing procedure can be long and stressful. You must not be enticed, though, to try to speed up the whole operation by using incorrect shortcuts. Instead, begin the packing procedure as soon as possible, move more rapidly and get the entire job done in the right manner.
Make a strategy for the packing steps. Work on your room-by-room plan, so the packing procedure can get less challenging and more successful. Begin with the least-used spaces first and continue to examine your steps against your strategy. Set aside a room to place your loaded containers so that they are not constantly getting in the way and making the home feel messy.
Starting the packing operations as soon as possible can help you to relieve the stress usually associated with moving from house to house and, by avoiding any last minute rushes, you have a better chance to pack all goods effectively for your future shift.
5. Do not overload any moving box
With all the stuff you have to arrange and do when transporting them, the last problem you need is a painful back. By over-loading one heavy moving box, you can quickly cause damage to you or your moving workers – not to mention that over-loading these moving containers makes them more a lot vulnerable to collapse or cracking under the pressure.
6. Label all things
If you are moving over a long distance, your furnishings and storage containers may share the vehicle with other people’s belongings. It is essential that you effectively mark all of your storage boxes to prevent them from being lost or mis-delivered. You would not, after all, post an empty letter in the mailbox and expect it to get at its final destination or to be recognized by the mailing company should it go missing.
Proper labeling of your moving containers also creates the entire unpacking procedure easier. You will be able to identify very quickly which space a certain box is meant to be sent to and you will not go forever unpacking all boxes to find just one thing that you want.
To make the moving storage containers more recognizable you have to label them correctly with the following info:
- Entire name
- Entire delivery address
- All job reference numbers that you have been assigned from the moving company
- All boxes’ contents
- All special handling guidelines, such as ‘Fragile’, Heavy’ or ‘This Way Up’
- The space that the container is to be placed in by the moving company
7. Avoid packing meals, beverages or other liquids
If you are moving a long way or you plan to move your furnishings and other belongings into a storage space for a longer period, then you must only pack meals that have a long shelf life, like sugar and processed food.
All food has to be put into airtight bins to prevent spilling and attack by pests.
You must not pack any beverages or fluids for transportation by your moving company. They represent too much of a risk to your other furnishings and products on the road.
8. Do not pack risky things
You should never pack things that are based on combustible, intense, toxic or otherwise dangerous in their characteristics. You should get rid of risky substances in a safe and environment friendly manner for transportation. Consult your regional authorities or regulating body for particular guidelines when disposing of dangerous products.
Sharp things should be covered thoroughly to prevent damage to you and your moving personnel, as well as to protect the other furnishings and belongings.
Fuel must be purged completely from your lawnmowers and other farming gadgets to prevent leaking and fire problems.
9. Take additional care when loading appliances and electronics
Wherever possible, it is best to put electronics and gadgets into their unique packing boxes. If the original box is not available, use durable moving containers instead. You must examine the guide that came with the electric products for any particular indications for transportation. If you have discarded the guide, you can do a look for the model no. using an online search engine – since many of them may be available for download from the companies’ websites. Any guides and guarantees should be loaded in their separate boxes.
Electrical gadgets can be especially delicate to pressure and static electricity. You must take additional safety measures to make sure that there is sufficient cushioning and that it has an anti-static characteristic. Anti-static bubble wrapping is perfect for covering most electric gadgets and equipment.
Boxes having electric products must be clearly marked so that your moving workers can quickly recognize them and make sure that these containers are placed at the top of the fill in the transportation vehicle. Another one aspect which needs to be taken into consideration is the weight of the total number of packages – remember that many moving companies charge also accroding to the weight of the loading onto the truck
You must take out any detachable media from your computers, DVDs, gaming devices, CDs, Blu-rays and other items and pack them independently to prevent their damage. Computer files have to be loaded onto convenient hard drives, USB gadgets or drives and arrived with you personally over there.
Fridges, washing machines, freezers, mobile air conditioners and other equipment should be thoroughly washed and dried before their transportation. All electric gadgets should also be disconnected approximately 24 hours before transporting or packing them so that they have sufficient time to cool down.
10. Do not pack the items that cannot be replaced
Never pack essential records and valuable family treasures for the moving companies to gather. These things should travel independently with you. Such important stuff may include traveling tickets, birth or marriage documents, foreign countries visas, property actions or documents and expensive jewelry.
