The 5 Most Badass Movies You Can Stream On Netflix Right Now

November 25, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

A good movie is a very subjective term. Sometimes you just need some intellectual movies with a lot of thought and meaning behind them. Sometimes, however, you just need some badass movies that will get your blood rushing through your veins. No fear, we’ve collected some films that can offer both. We all have that one mood and there is no better way to feed into it. So, in case you’re unsure of what badass movies actually invoke, we’re here to help. We know exactly the kind of feeling they’re supposed to ignite and this is what we went with. Read ahead, set the timer on your popcorn, get comfortable on the touch, and let’s get started.

#1 Django Unchained

5 Most Badass Movies

Most of Quentin Tarantino’s works can be classified as badass movies when you really think of it. Every time he announces a new project, all of the people coordinating gun stunts and blood special effects must be popping champagne bottles. Django Unchained brings Jaime Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio together in a Western-like movie set during the peaking time of slavery in America. It doesn’t get any better than a slave-turned-bounty hunter going guns blazing for revenge in the name of love.

#2 No Country For Old Men

No Country For Old Men

The Coen brothers definitely have a bit of a formula for their stories by now, but the best materialization so far has to be No Country For Old Men. The movie is a Coen-typical tale about a treasure hunt or, rather, a hunt in general. Llewellyn Moss does manage to snatch a highly sought-after loot, but in the aftermath of his heed, he is now being chased by a sheriff and some murderers. One of said murders is no other Javier Bardem’s Anton Chigurh, one of the most chilling antagonist performances ever put on film.

#3 The Grey

The Grey

Compared to the other aforementioned entries, The Grey isn’t necessarily as critically acclaimed. It will either be a hit or a miss. For us personally, this Liam Neeson film is a definite hit. It’s a hardened and gritty movie, telling the story of a group of plane crash survivors who are trying to adapt to the harshness of the frozen environment. Did we mention there is a dangerous pack of wolves lurking around too? It’s definitely not an optimistic movie, but we’d call it one of the more badass movies out there.

#4 The Expendables

Wait, are you saying that you were looking for badass movies which require you to shut off your brain? Are you looking for something that can get you to pump your fist and scream “hell yeah!” at the top of your lungs? There’s no better movie for this than The Expendables, the motion picture that brings together some of the greatest 90s action icons of all time. It’s like the fanfiction we never knew we wanted. Sylvester Stalone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Bourne, and Bruce Willis all kicking serious butt and make hilarious references? Sign us up!

#5 Skyfall

Skyfall

Skyfall is arguably one of the greatest James Bond movies ever made. The directing was phenomenal, the acting and writing were stellar, and Adele’s Oscar-winning soundtrack is the perfect cherry on top. Spy-related movies are definitely instant choices for badass movies and this one might just be the best. Each one of us must have sat down at some point and wondered what life as a spy would be like. So, if you want to see lots of action, fancy gadgets, luxurious cars, and beautiful women, be ready to immerse yourself in this world of top-notch espionage and feel the thrills.

THE END

By the time you’ve finished reading this article, your popcorn must have gotten ready. So, go fetch it, and log into your Netflix account for a session of badass movies that will definitely put you in an energized mood. And if not, hey, at least you witnessed a lot of proper (well-executed) action!

9 TV Shows That Were First Books

February 29, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

This is the decade of adaptations. I mean, sure, books as old as time were turned over the years in movies, some an unhealthy number of times (seriously, please, stop). But these days, having a bestseller book, especially if it’s part of the ever so popular YA category, means an almost certain green light for a big screen production. There are few people left who don’t know that this film they’re watching used to be a book or, more, a franchise. Movies aren’t the only things that books make the transition towards, though. Some made the transition to television instead. In fact, there are some TV shows you might not even suspect of being backed by novels. So, in order to make this fact know, this is a list of 9 TV Shows That Were First Books.

1. Game Of Thrones

TV Shows That Were First Books - Game Of Thrones

Based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire written by George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones has to be the TV show whose origins the majority of the audience is aware of. The TV show is known for many things, unpredictability and shock factor included, but its biggest ace is its ability to keep viewers hooked and wondering. Given these circumstances, it’s not surprising that many people turned to the books during the show’s hiatuses, in hopes that they would perhaps reveal further information on their favorite character’s whereabouts. Unfortunately, although Game of Thrones definitely maintains much of the source material, it often diverges from the books and now, with the premiere of the sixth season, it will completely surpass their timeline.

2. Sherlock

Sherlock - TV Shows That Were First Books

Who doesn’t know about the worldwide famous novels and stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the man behind the creation of Sherlock Holmes? His tales have been adapted and re-adapted a copious amount of times through the decades, though it’s very likely that BBC’s Emmy nominee Sherlock is the most unique. Taking the premise of the crime solving duo Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, then embedding it in a modern setting, this show reinvented the series. It benefits from great cinematography and two lead actors, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, who were critically acclaimed for their performances.

3. Sex And The City

TV Shows That Were First Books - Sex And The City

HBO didn’t always produce TV shows that were a controversial mix of graphic violence and nudity. Thanks to Candace Bushnell, who finally managed to get her ideas published after she filled the columns on the New York Observer with them, we got Sex and the City. This story follows around four women’s lives, filled with relationship and romance issues, though what truly made this series stand out was its great satirical tone, and its cultural impact that opened doors for media composed of a cast of almost entirely women.

4. House Of Cards

House Of Cards, One Of The TV Shows That Were First Books

One of the most critically acclaimed productions of the era, House of Cards is what truly let the world know that Netflix means business with its original series. But for the premise, we have to thank Michael Dobbs, a British politician that wrote the book that’s behind the series. Since it was a politician who crafted the story, the focus is naturally on another politician, by the name Frank Underwood, as he pursues his ambitious goal of occupying the seat of the most powerful man in the world. Praised for its impressive line-up of cast members and storytelling, this TV show helped us know how truly vicious politics can be.

5. Dexter

TV Shows That Were First Books Include Dexter

This criminally good TV show has its origins in the Jeff Lindsay novel, Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Being the production that became the trademark of Showtime, Dexter gave us a generous number of seasons as it followed around Michael C. Hall’s character, a serial killer with a consciousness rattled by righteousness. Considering that many of the criminals out there eluded the punishment they truly deserve, Dexter takes matters in his own hands, and makes us all question our sanity and morality in the process.

6. M*A*S*H

M*A*S*H, Among The TV Shows That Were First Books

It’s not just TV shows from the late 90’s onward that learned what success is. Initially a lesser known novel literary novel, this 70’s series focuses on a group of military surgeons in the heart of a war in South Korea. However, given the time period, many people chose to believe that the show inserted various nods to the conflicts in Vietnam, especially given the accuracy with which some details were being told. M*A*S*H truly stood out by being the perfect mix of comedy and serious tones, even managing to strike a controversial chord with its much talked about series finale.

7. True Blood

True Blood Is Next On The List Of TV Shows That Were First Books

Before HBO decided to follow up on the vampire craze that blew up in the last several years with True Blood, we had Charlaine Harris and her The Southern Vampire Mysteries series. In both stories, we follow protagonist Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress who’s struggled her whole life with the ability to read minds. In a world where supernatural is well known to humans, she meets Bill Compton, a 173 year old vampire, and gets tangled in a series of affairs that result in a lot of trouble.

8. Orange Is The New Black

TV Shows That Were First Books - Orange Is The New Black

Another brilliant production with the Netflix trademark annexed to it, Orange Is The New Black was adapted from Piper Kerman’s memoirs, where she actually shares her experiences from behind the bars of an all women prison. The series was highly praised, especially for the variety of characters and inclusion of a race and orientation diversity, as well as for the masterful acting and the quality insights and developments of the characters.

9. Hannibal

Hannibal - TV Shows That Were First Books

Thomas Harris wrote Red Dragon, the novel which would soon become the inspiration behind the series that follows the infamous Hannibal Lecter. Even though adaptations have been made before, most notable being the chilling portrayal offered by Anthony Hopkins, Hannibal takes a different approach. Instead, it focuses on the complex relationship between Doctor Lecter and the detective trailing his murders, Will Graham, and the ways in which the former manipulates the ones around him to cover up his dark secret.

How many of these did you know about? Sure, some of the series have behind a single, lone novel, while others were built on the foundation of an entire franchise, possibly still ongoing (I’m looking at you, G.R.R. Martin, stop procrastinating). Still, it’s always interesting to know at least 9 TV Shows That Were First Books.

Top 5 Less Popular Netflix Shows

July 27, 2015 By Anne Burwell Leave a Comment

TV shows marathons and nights in spent binging on TV series have increased in popularity during the last years. If you need some inspiration for choosing your next TV show, take a look at this top 5 less popular Netflix shows. Ever since releasing “House of Cards” and “Orange is the new black” Netflix has kept the TV shows coming. But somehow, nothing managed to gain as much popularity as those two. Despite of their low ratings, the following series are totally worth watching. So go ahead and cancel your plans for the next weekend, I have a hunch you’ll need all your time for watching TV.

1. Bloodline

Less Popular Netflix Shows

This thriller drama TV series was created by Todd A. Kessler, Glenn Kessler, and Daniel Zelman. The show revolves around the Rayburn family, who hold and manage a hotel in Florida Keys. The intrigue is caused by the eldest son, Danny, who makes some noise on his parents’ 45th anniversary. It appears the Rayburns’ past is not spotless clean, and there are some skeletons in their closet, which involves the death of a Rayburn member. Danny makes waves by threatening his kin to destroy and bring down their entire legacy.

2. Chef’s table

Less Popular Netflix Shows

This is a documentary that focuses on food as an artistic expression. The first season consists of 6 episodes and each of these follows a single famous chef from different corners of the world such as Massimo Bottura (Italy), Francis Mallmann (Argentina), Niki Nakayama (USA) and Ben Shewry (Australia). The amazing photography will surely whet your appetite for a luxurious dinner at an expensive restaurant, so get ready to go out and indulge yourself after each episode of this mouth watering TV show. Even if you’re not a chef, or if you don’t particularly like spending time in the kitchen, you’ll love this TV series for its authenticity and savory taste.

3. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Less Popular Netflix Shows

Incredibly funny, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” was created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock and it stars Ellie Kemper. The show follows 29-year-old Kimmy Schmidt as she adjust to her new life in New York City. This follows her rescue from a doomsday cult where she had been held against her will for 15 years alongside other 3 women. She starts her adventures by working as a nanny, morally supported by her friendly landlady, and her roommate, who is an actor.

4. Grace and Frankie

Less Popular Netflix Shows

With an outstanding actors’ crew, “Grace and Frankie” is a comedy series that was created by Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris. Season 2 of the series was just renewed after the success of the 13 episodes from season 1. The plot of this show is unique, slightly absurd, but in the end amazing. “Grace and Frankie” revolves around two elderly couples who are seemingly ordinary. That is until the two husbands confess their love for each other and announce the wives they are leaving them. The two women are left to live together and care after each other, despite the fact that they have never really enjoyed each other’s company.

5. Sense 8

Less Popular Netflix Shows

This is a sci-fi drama show produced by the “Matrix” team. It tells the story of eight strangers who are seemingly unconnected since they come from totally different backgrounds. Following a common vision experienced by all the characters, they are reborn as Sensates, finding themselves mentally connected, with the newly found ability to communicate and use each other’s knowledge. There is, of course, a bad guy: Whispers tries to hunt down the 8 people in an attempt to capture them. And there is also a good guy who comes to their aid: mysterious Jonas makes everything in his power to protect the 8 strangers from Whispers.

List of Netflix Original Series That are Planned for 2015

April 10, 2015 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

House of Cards’ Season 3 isn’t the only Netflix Original Series to be released this year.

Netflix is on a roll, and we couldn’t be more happy with their streaming service –  for only $8.99 a month I can binge watch House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Bloodline and countless other TV series and awesome movies.

Here’s what to expect from Netflix this year:

2015 Netflix Show

  • DareDevil

DareDevil is actually premièring tonight so don’t miss it. Netflix and Marvel struck a deal, and with this new partnership they will be bringing us five new shows based on the expanded Marvel Universe. The first one to see the light of day is DareDevil, and it’s going to maintain the same origin story – as a boy, Matt Murdock – DareDevil – was in an unfortunate and terrible accident that blinded him. The event also gave him super powers. Matt, who is portrayed by Charlie Cox, fights injustice as a lawyer by day, and by night he takes criminals to Pummelling Street.

2015 Netflix Show

  • AKA Jessica Jones

We don’t have a release date for this show yet, but what we do know is that it’s going to be based on the expanded Marvel Universe. It will star Krysten Ritter, and the story will revolve around how a woman gives up crime-fighting as a superhero to become a private investigator – Super Detective Woman.

2015 Netflix SHow

  • Luke Cage

The third Netflix-Marvel child show will focus on Luke Cage, who in the comics is Jones’ husband. It’s rumoured to be released after the first season of Jessica Jones ends. Mike Colte will play Luke Cage, and the co-executive producer in charge of Almost Human, Naren Shankar will be the series’ showrunner.

Almost Human isn’t the only show that Naren has worked on. His other projects include: Farscape, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Night Visions, The Outer Limits, The Chronicle, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, seaQuest 2032, Grimm and Star Trek: Voyager.

That’s one hell of a resume.

Netflix 2015 Show

  • Chef’s Table

For all of you gourmands out there Chef’s Table is going to be available on the 26th of April, and this six-part documentary will focus on famous chefs from around the world. Ben Shewry, Magnus Nilsson and Dan Barber will make your taste buds jump in excitement.

Netflix 2015 Show

  • Grace and Frankie

Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin will star in Netflix’s Grace and Frankie. A story about two rivals that bond over the fact that their husbands have fallen in love with each other.  The show premiers on the 8th of May.

Netflix 2015 Show

  • Sense8

From Matrix creators Andy and Lana Wachowski, and Babylon 5’s J. Michael Straczynski, Sense8 is a new science fiction drama series about eight strangers all over the world who inexplicably become mentally linked to each other. Each episode will focus on one character and their story. There isn’t a main theme, but we were hinted that we will see the show focuse on sexuality, gender, persecution, bigotry, fear and identity crisis. It will be available on Netflix starting June the 5th.

I’m really excited about this new project by the Wachowski brothers, even though their last movie – Jupiter Ascending – was incredibly weak, I still have faith in them. More so when I found out that Cloud Atlas co-director Wachowski is on board.

Season 3

  • Orange is the New Black

Season 3 will hit this summer – on June the 12th to be more exact. Last season was the best so far, and for the past year I’ve been craving for more Piper Chapman, Sam Healy, Galina Red Reznikov, Taystee Jefferson and Poussey Washington. And I promise this time I won’t watch it in 2 days and then complain to my room mate Mark how empty life feels.

Pablo Escobar

  • Narcos

Does Pedro Pascal ring any bells to you? Well, how about Oberyn Martell? Yes, exactly him. The Game of Thrones actor that uhm met The Mountain, has his very own show. The story will focus on the life of Pablo Escobar and his cartel. An official date hasn’t been announced yet.

2015 Netflix Show

  • Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp

The first time that I read the shows name I instantly thought that Netflix was going into porn, but oh how horribly wrong I was. Starring Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Molly Shannon, Elizabeth Banks, Chris Pine, Jon Hamm, Kristin Wiig, Jason Schwartzman and Jon Hamm the show is a must-see. Only 8 episodes have been announced, but you know that Netflix is going to release them all in one day – one day to binge watch them all that is. Take a day off on the July the 17th.

2015 Netflix Show

  • Dinotrux

The show will be based on Chris Gall’s children books – dinosaur stories combined with construction vehicles. Yes, it’s a kids show, an animation actually, made by Dreamworks Animation. It will be available sometimes this Summer.

Season 3

  • Hemlock Grove

This will be the final season of Hemlock Grove. After 3 season filled with creepy supernatural events, it’s time for the characters to bury their hatchets and move on – probably in each other’s skulls. It will appear this year – no official date has been announced.

Season 4

  • Longmire

The canned TV show Longmire will make its 4th season available on Netflix. With 10 new episodes, the show has the hard task of convincing everyone into wanting another season. Although it’s rumoured to appear this year, there are huge changes that it’s going to be pushed to 2016.

Co-Creator of F is for Family

  • F is for Family

Comedian Bill Burr and The Simpsons’ writer and producer Michael Price will be in charge of this little gem that almost escaped my eyes. It’s going to be an animated sitcom series that will début sometime this year.

Netflix French drama

  • Marseille

Set in France, shot in France – everything is France with this show. It’s a French drama – go figure – that will be available in late 2015.
