The 10 Best Disney Sidekicks

June 9, 2016 By Toby Isaacson Leave a Comment

It became an unwritten rule that every good hero needs a good sidekick. This is mostly a good thing, for audiences in particular, but it usually ends up backfiring in the case of the protagonist. Why would it backfire, you ask? In a lot of times, the sidekick is written as a comic relief as well.

In the good ole days, that’s all the purpose they served to the story, but the evolution of storytelling allowed for the creation of much more in-depth sidekicks. In other words, they often steal the hero’s thunder through their humor and nature that’s much closer to real human nature. Some of the best Disney sidekicks abide by these rules, as well. Who are they? Read ahead to find out.

#1 Timon & Pumbaa, “Lion King”

Best Disney Sidekicks

We’re right off the bat and there is already a little bit of cheating going on here. It’s impossible to separate Timon from Pumbaa and this is precisely why they’re totally worthy of topping this list. They had personality, they had humor, they contributed to Simba’s story, and they gave us a memorable song. Hakuna matata, everyone!

#2 Kronk, “The Emperor’s New Groove”

It’s clear by now that we’re going by the humor these Disney sidekicks bring to the table and Kronk might just be one of the funniest. He also manages to stand out through the fact that he is actually the sidekick of a villain instead.

#3 Linguini, “Ratatouille”

Best Disney Sidekicks

Linguini is a funny dude, yes, but the reason why he’s so high up on the list is because he’s the only sidekick here that’s actually a human – and a sidekick to a rat, nonetheless. This automatically gives him a certain level of depth that makes him three-dimensional and relatable.

#4 Tinkerbell, “Peter Pan”

We’d like to continue the “different” pattern and address the fact that Tinkerbell is truly a fantastic character. She doesn’t speak, she’s not that funny, but she breaks the stereotype by being humanly selfish, jealous, and bitter. There’s a lot of depth in that tiny body.

#5 Olaf, “Frozen”

Best Disney Sidekicks

Olaf is almost as marketed as Elsa and Ana and that says a lot. He didn’t necessarily have that much of an impact, but he was endearingly optimistic and his innocent aspiration to see what summer’s like made us all smile bitterly.

#6 Sebastian, “The Little Mermaid”

Traditionally, the sidekick is a little less bright and the hero. In turn, the hero is forced to clean up the messes caused by said sidekick. The roles are reversed when it comes to Ariel and Sebastian, who rather resembles a wise advisor trying to keep the red-haired mermaid out of trouble. Plus, Under the Sea makes the whole movie.

#7 Mushu, “Mulan”

Best Disney Sidekicks

A tiny dragon acting like a huge dragon with the voice of Edie Murphy? Sign us up! While Mulan’s personal journey was undeniably inspirational, it was Mushu who often kept us smiling through the various hardships that the warrior princess had to face. And if you think Mushu’s funny as it is, think about the fact that he was initially supposed to have two heads.

#8 Genie, “Aladdin”

The Genie is the definite trademark symbol of Aladdin and it’s understandably so. He’s hilarious, unique in design, and the fact that he’s voiced by the ever so talented legendary Robbie Williams is a fantastic bonus.

#9 Baloo, “The Jungle Book”

Best Disney Sidekicks

Baloo is, arguably, the best example of what we were talking about in the beginning – a sidekick much more popular than the story’s protagonist. Mowgli was an overall nice kid, but it was difficult to steal the spotlight from one of the best pun-based songs ever, Bare Necessities.

#10 Lumiere & Cogsworth, “Beauty and the Beast”

In perfect symmetry, we conclude this list with yet another inseparable duo. Perhaps these two work even better together, for the simple fact that their personalities are so different that they perfectly contrast each other. Who would’ve thought a talking candlestick and a clock would become so endearing?

Top 10 Disney Movie Villains Who Deserve Their Own Movie

May 17, 2016 By Anne Burwell Leave a Comment

They say that a story is often as good as its villain. We’re way past traditional storytelling that pits the obvious knighted good guys against Sauron-type antagonists who only wish to destroy the world as we know it. Well, unless you’re Disney, that is. It’s true, the bad guys are less flashy and obvious these days (remember how shocked we were all after Hans’ betrayal in Frozen), but you can pinpoint the antagonist from a crowd of thousands.

That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad thing, though. A villain can be wholly evil and nonredeemable. As long as we kind of get it and as long as they instill in our hearts the dread and intimidation they’re supposed to, they’re doing their job right. After the success of Maleficent, we can’t help but want to see more of Disney’s timeless villains be given more depth. These are the Top 10 Disney Movie Villains Who Deserve Their Own Movie.

#1 Scar, “Lion King”

Disney Movie Villains

Courtesy of Disney

Scar is arguably Disney’s greatest villain, if only for the fact that he was able to murder his own brother in cold blood via stampedes. We are given a detailed peek into his backstory through the book A Tale of Two Brothers, but it would all translate even better on the big screens. The vicious lion’s biggest flaw might just be his alleged one-dimensional personality, which would easily be countered through a movie that unfolds the growing hatred for Mufasa and his descent into darkness.

#2 Hades, “Hercules”

Face it, Hades was one of your favorite characters in Hercules. It’s difficult not to like him – he is a completely different, cranky, and comical version of the God of the Underworld and it all works surprisingly well. A backstory movie on Disney’s Hades would be like a full-length feature film with Loki. Would anyone have any complaints to that?

#3 Claude Frollo, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”

Disney Movie Villains

Courtesy of Disney

The dark undertones in this movie were mostly thanks to Claude Frollo, so make no mistake – a movie all about him probably wouldn’t be that much of a family-friendly production. This possibility opens the door to a movie that tackles down powerful and sensitive topics such as religion and corruption, a foundation for a heavily-themed and profound motion picture.

#4 The Queen of Hearts, “Alice in Wonderland”

Every single character from Wonderland deserves to have a spotlight shine on them, but it’s always interesting to see how the bad guys of the story came to be what they are today. How did the Queen of Hearts rise to power? Was it hereditary? Did she take it by force? Is her favorite way of execution, decapitation, just a fancy quirk or does it have roots in her childhood? There are so many aspects to explore that we get excited just thinking about it.

#5 Mother Gothel, “Tangled”

Disney Movie Villains

Courtesy of Disney

The wicked witch who keeps Rapunzel locked in a tower in order to benefit from the magical youth-inducing powers of her hair can be so much more than, well, a wicked witch. Mother Gothel confused us all with the contrast between her obvious evil vibes and the strange feeling that, deep down, she may have cared for Rapunzel even a little bit. Where her obsession with eternal youth comes from and how she really feels about Rapunzel would all make excellent topics for a film.

#6 Yzma, “The Emperor’s New Groove”

Some villains are menacing while some are… so much better than that. The Emperor’s New Groove was a radically different story from what we normally get from Disney and arguably the biggest stars of the movie were Yzma and her simple-minded sidekick, Kronk. Just the story of how Kronk came to be in Yzma’s service would be amazing, but it’s safe to say that a movie whose main focus is Yzma has the potential to be one of the most hilarious Disney products ever.

#7 Davy Jones, “Pirates of the Caribbean”

Disney Movie Villains

Courtesy of Disney

Yes, we all tend to forget this sometimes, but Pirates of the Caribbean is a Disney movie. Davy Jones was intimidating and ruthless, something that apparently was the result of his heart getting (literally) ripped away by the goddess Calypso whom he’d fallen in love with. From the love story to the typical pirate adventures, the descent into darkness, and how Davy Jones came to become the captain of the Flying Dutchman, this tale already sounds fascinating.

#8 Ursula, “The Little Mermaid”

When you think about it, was she really a villain? Sure, it was her magic that rid Ariel of her voice and threw in some complications in her quest for love, but if it weren’t for Ursula, none of it would have been possible to begin with. Ariel had to learn the harsh way that you can’t gain something without losing something else in return. But what we’d really love to see, aside from a movie set underwater full of mermaids and corals and colorful fish, is how Ursula came to earn her reputation in the kingdom underneath the waves.

#9 Gaston, “Beauty and the Beast”

Disney Movie Villains

Courtesy of Disney

In Beauty and the Beast, the biggest enemy was the Beast himself with his insecurities, monstrous appearance, and temper. Therefore, it’s clear that Gaston wasn’t created to be a full-fledged villain and, rather, a complication. He’s narcissistic, arrogant, all brawns and no brain, and he would make a fantastic protagonist in a movie that explains how he came to be what he is. Perhaps he was spoiled rotten – either way, whatever the reason, we would get a comical movie with a main character almost as vain and clueless as Kuzco from The Emperor’s New Groove.

#10 Lady Tremaine, “Cinderella”

The 2015 movie adaptation of the classic tale already took a different turn with the Evil Stepmother when it revealed that, in fact, she was envious of Cinderella’s kindness all along. Although there are no superpowers involved, Lady Tremaine’s backstory has the potential to be an emotional tale that can have her come out on top as the result of an unfortunate series of moments in her life. Maybe she was cursed with parents who treated her as horribly as she treated Cinderella. Whatever it was, it’s a chance to showcase a story of corruption that, ultimately, has no happy ending.

Disney Movies That Should Actually Exist

August 19, 2015 By Anne Burwell Leave a Comment

There aren’t many things that are better than a Disney movie. That mainly because of the awesome supporting characters. Just picture this: a prequel all about Mulan’s grandmother. And yes, it would come with all the sass the granny has, but in the form of a hilarious teenager. Or maybe you’re curious about what really happens to the Genie after he is set free. I know I am dying to find out and I would chew my fingernails from the moment they’d announce the movie release till I could go see it in a theater. Enough beating around the bush, let’s take a look at the Disney movies that should actually exist.

1. Boo from Monsters, Inc.

Disney Movies That Should Actually Exist

We all fell head over heels with the two year old from “Monsters, Inc.” rooting for her to be saved and brought back home safe and sound. And now imagine what it would be like to follow Boo through her teenage years. Would she turn goth or become a cheerleader? Either way, we would all be holding our breath for her possible reunion with Sulley.

2. Ursula from The Little Mermaid

Disney Movies That Should Actually Exist

We don’t know that much about Ursula, which means anything would be possible in a hypothetical prequel. There are so many questions to be answered. Why is she no longer allowed in the kingdom? What happened to her before she was banished? Come on, Disney, let you writers take the reins of this one and prove to everyone Ursula was not always a villain, and that deep down she’s all kindness and generosity.

3. Fairy Godmother from Cinderella

Disney Movies That Should Actually Exist

Cinderella can’t possibly be the only one to need the help of the Fairy Godmother, am I right? So wouldn’t it be awesome if we could see whom she helps next? It could be a character we’re already familiar with, or a completely new one. We’re open to suggestions, as long as we get to find out what’s up with the Godmother’s mysterious appearance and how come she can lend a helping hand to good people?

4. The Beast from Beauty and the Beast

Disney Movies That Should Actually Exist

I can’t be the only one dying to see the backstory here. Imagine the poster for “Beast and the Beauty”. We would finally get the chance to see more of this intriguing character, what he went through and how he got where he is.

5. The mice from Cinderella

Disney Movies That Should Actually Exist

But really, any mice Disney movie would do. There can be so many adventures to be had and so many funny and ridiculous situations to go through. Also, there should be cheese involved.

6. The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland

Disney Movies That Should Actually Exist

This would be a deliciously insane prequel. Although I would like to insist Helena Bonham Carter be given a role in this one. Going back to the Mad Hatter, the possibilities are limitless here as well. You can build a lot around “we’re all mad here”. Let’s see, was he always “special” or was he once small and innocent like Alice?

7. Hades from Hercules

Disney Movies That Should Actually Exist

Who wouldn’t want to watch a movie all about the lord of the dead? Here’s a suggestion, Disney. Hades could be up there mingling with la crème de la crème and secretly conspiring to overthrow Zeus from power.

8. Pegasus from Hercules

Disney Movies That Should Actually Exist

I’m aware Pegasus didn’t possess the gift of the gab, but “Wall-E” already set a precedent for these kinds of characters. Wouldn’t you be curious to see what he was up to while Hercules was busy growing up? I would buy myself and five other friends a ticket right now.

The Amazing Disney Facts You Never Knew

January 8, 2015 By This Blog Rules Guest Leave a Comment

We all love to settle down with some popcorn and by entertained by singing fish and evil witches, don´t we?

Disney films have given pleasure to millions over the decades but what amazing Disney facts are you not yet aware of? Maybe these ones.

The Alternative Dwarfs

Disney facts you never knew

We all know and love those 7 dwarfs but how would you have liked them if they can been given crappy names like Burpy, Chesty, Tubby, Hickey, Deafy, Wheezy and Awful? These were the name Walt Disney was originally going to give them. In fact, they weren´t given names at all in the original Brothers Grimm tale and in other versions of Snow White they have been called all sorts of stupid names.

The Hidden Characters

Disney movie facts you never knew

The folks at Disney love to hide unexpected characters in their films. For example, in King Triton´s concert at the start of the Little Mermaid the audience includes Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and Goofy. In The Hunchback of Notre Dame song Out There you can see Belle, Pumbaa and even Aladdin´s magic carpet.

The Fewest Words Spoken by Characters

Disney facts

The only Disney main character to be completely word-less for the whole movie is Dumbo. Next in line is Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, who only had around 18 lines in the whole movie. On the other hand, the first Disney character to speak was Mickey Mouse and his enigmatic first words were “Hot dog”.

The Facial Hair Issue

Disney facts you never knew

While staff at Disneyland were barred from growing facial hair for a long time, it is even stranger to think that guests with facial hair were banned when it first opened. Any dude with long hair was also declared persona non grata.

The Disneyland Workers

Disney facts you never knew

A good number of Disneyland workers have gone to fame and fortune, while some even grew a beard as soon as they stopped working there. Among the future stars to work with Mickey and the gang were Steve Martin, Kevin Costner and Michelle Pfeiffer. Some rumours suggest that Robin Williams worked there as a tour guide.

More Hidden Stuff

Disney movie facts you never knew

So, did the dust kicked up in The Lion King really form the word “sex” in the sky? If you look really hard it does appear to be true. The official response from the people behind the film is that it says “SFX” as a sort of signature. Less debate is needed around the hidden nude image in The Rescuers. Disney admitted that a naked woman appears in the background as our intrepid heroes fly on a sardine tin. A recall of the video (yeah, this happened a while ago now that you mention it) was ordered.

Snow White Struggled for Work

Disney facts you never knew

The actress who voiced Snow White in the classic film was called Adriana Caselotti. She was paid just $970 for her work, although in today´s money that works out as a more impressive $16,000 or so. She was under contract to Disney but was blocked from taking on more work in order to avoid spoiling the illusion of Snow White. Her voice pops up briefly on The Wizard of Oz and It´s a Wonderful Life but you´ll struggle to find her featured on any other film.

Famous Last Words

Disney facts

Walt Disney left us with some of the most intriguing last words ever. Rather than speaking them he wrote them on a piece of paper. So what did he write that day in 1966 when he passed away? “Kurt Russell”. No one knows why he wrote the then child actor´s name down.

Disney’s Dark Side and Maleficent

April 23, 2014 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

We’ve previously shared with you a list of not widely known Disney short films and animations that are unlike what you would expect or at least… well, weird. But the weirdness stems from originating somewhere into the past while the things they addressed have considerably changed in the meantime.

What we want to talk about today is a different trend in Disney movies that seems to be ongoing and growing: Disney is getting darker, it seems. Some see this as something to be concerned about, since the movies are meant for children, while others are enthusiastically embracing the change, arguing that the Disney movies haven’t been solely for children for a long time now.

Disney’s Dark Side

First of all, let us all take a moment to remember Bambi (1941). After witnessing his mother killed by the hunter, Bambi cries and just wanders through the forest, in the snow, calling for his mother, until he runs into his dad. The dad then says: “Your mother can’t be with you anymore”. The end. Bambi is literally the go-to nickname nowadays when one wishes to call someone a sad, sad, sad face. The countless pop culture references to the heart-breaking deer all speak of how kind of horrible the movie was. And that was only the beginning. Disney didn’t stop there, oh no it didn’t.

1

How about The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)? Sure, it’s based on one hell of a book that included many cruel and sad scenes in the first place, but Disney managed to not tone it down as much as one would expect from a company producing children’s movies. The beginning of the movie features Frollo killing Quasimodo’s mother in a pool of blood and attempting to drown him in a well like “the demon” that he is. How lovely, right?

2

But nothing is quite as depressing as Up (2009): in the 4 minutes opening the film, a couple falls in love, marries, dreams of children and adventures and travelling together, only to have their hopes crushed by miscarriage and heartbreak, followed by the wife’s illness and dying. If that’s not enough to plant the seeds of commitment issues in the new generation, I don’t know what is.

3

Maleficent: A Masterpiece of Darker Disney

Maleficent seems to be a masterpiece to crown Disney’s dark side developed so far. Watch the trailer and it’s almost guaranteed to make you look forward to it if you haven’t seen it already. Even if you’re not usually into Disney movies so much, there are still two compelling reasons to watch it: Angelina Jolie and Lana del Rey. One cannot think of a voice more suitable to accompany Jolie’s face and the eerie beauty of Maleficent’s background story.

Maleficent_live_action

The original song of Disney’s original Maleficent version is actually a cover of Tchaikovsky’s main theme of the Sleeping Beauty ballet. Probably all former kids that were Disney fans knew it, but the words and the tune seemed a bit silly ever since we grew up. Well, thanks to the gorgeously darkened Lana del Rey intense cover, not any more. I’ve known this song to melt even people who weren’t Lana del Rey fans, previously. Now that’s a really cool way to show off Disney’s dark side; listen to it a couple of times and you’ll probably find it strangely intense and haunting and addictive.

Exploring slightly darker themes like a villain’s background story or making said villain more complex by showing what drove them to become who they are isn’t the onset of an ambiguous moral compass for Disney, as critics claim, but merely a more realistic approach to the complexity of human character. Since simple black-and-white stories were kind of boring, we should hope to see more of Disney’s dark side, especially if it comes with lovely goth aesthetics and more Lana del Rey.
