We looked a while ago at some of the world’s largely unknown countries, such as Vanuatu and Tokealua. Well, as strange as it may seem, there are yet more countries out there which you probably haven’t heard of either.

I have to confess that I once lived a few hundred miles away from here without knowing anything about its existence. It has been called the smallest nation in the world and it is really an artificial fortress island the British built during WWII. The current occupiers claim that it is an independent state, though. It was once the home to a “pirate” radio station and these days it lies within UK waters. The Bates family own it and one of them even ended up in court for firing warning shot to a British vessel which approached Sealand. It is unlikely to be the scene of a gigantic battle for independence any time soon, as no more than 5 people are thought to live here at any one time. [Read more…]

The World According to Americans

An American’s perception of the rest of the world, and indeed their own mighty nation, is a naive thing indeed. So says The World According to Americans, a comically altered map of the globe. On the evidence presented here, every country and every sea and every continent on the face of this here Earth can best be summed up with a simple cultural stereotype, vague and harsh and uninformed as it may be. The U.S. lives in the civilised world, of course. Their upstairs neighbours, they’re vegetarians. Those folks over there in Eastern Europe, they’re all commies. Africa? They’ve got AIDS. Oh, and above them? Fucking desert, dude!

The World According to Americans is designed by Bulgarian artist Yanko Tsvetkov, aka the alphadesigner. It is part of his satirical Mapping Stereotypes project, which sees him mapping out the globe with side-splitting cultural stereotypes taken from the perspectives of various different nations. You can see the rest of Mapping Stereotypes here, but I think most will agree this is the best, and funniest, entry in a tremendously hilarious project.

A World Map Made of 3,000 Coins

“Money makes the world go round,” they say. “Money makes the world, full stop,” would be the reply of Perniclas Bedow, creator of a world of copper, gold and silver coins. Arranged by Swedish design studio Bedow, the piece is a world map made entirely out of over 3,000 coins from around the world: in a stroke of artistic genius, each continent was built using its own currency.

A 2009 project, it was arranged for use by Erik Penser Bankaktiebolag, a Swedish bank. One hopes that the bank’s security guards are keeping a close eye on Bedow’s stunning piece: anyone short on a bus fare may steal a bit of Ohio. You really have to be a geography freak to know about these countries from the list. It’s irrelevant to us how recognized they are as countries but they surely look at themselves like that. Of course a special thanks to Wikipedia for the article’s research.
