7 Amazing Stunt Doubles of Famous Actors

January 19, 2016 By Anne Burwell Leave a Comment

Who doesn’t enjoy a good action-packed blockbuster every now and then? These extremely popular movies feature some of the most beloved actors, whom we unknowingly credit for all the incredible stunts they do. However, the men and women behind these incredible action sequences do not receive the recognition they deserve. There are numerous amazing stunt doubles of famous actors, and we have selected five of the most well known for their work with the likes of John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford and Uma Thurman.

1. Chuck Roberson

Chuck Roberson is one of the most amazing stunt doubles of famous actors.

The first in our top of amazing stunt doubles of famous actors is Chuck Roberson, the man who did all famous and dangerous action scenes of John Wayne across 25 amazing years. He was present in classics as The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Searchers and Rio Bravo. However, Roberson did not stop here and also pursued other jobs such as actor and stunt coordinator. Wayne was capable of doing the stunts himself, but that would not have been smart, since Roberson did break several ribs and his arms, as well as fractured his back during the stunts.

2. Buddy Van Horn

Clint Eastwood had a long collaboration with his double, Buddy Van Horn.

An experienced horse rider, Van Horn managed to find work as a stunt double during the times when the Western genre was truly popular. He started working with Clint Eastwood in 1969 in the movie Coogan’s Bluff. This was the beginning of a collaboration that spanned over decades and included grand performances: Stranger in High Plains Drifter, Dirty Harry, Preacher in Pale Rider and Thunderbolt. After retiring from stunts, Van Horn worked as a stunt coordinator on later films with Eastwood.

3. Peter Kent

One of the amazing stunt doubles of famous actors is Peter Kent who worked on 14 movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Peter Kent is one of the amazing stunt doubles of famous actors thanks to his work with Arnold Schwarzenegger. When Schwarzenegger first saw him, he ironically joked that Kent was too tall and thin to be his double. Kent ended up collaborating with the famous actor on fourteen movies, among which the Terminator series, True Lies, Commando and Predator. Unfortunately, he had to retire after suffering an accident in 1996 during the filming of Eraser, when he was hit by a heavy shipping container while hanging from a wire. After breaking a couple of bones including his collar bone, Kent continued to be a stunt coordinator and actor. Furthermore, he opened his own stunt school and is at the moment a city councilor in British Columbia, Canada.

4. Vic Armstrong

Vic Armstrong helped Harrison Ford achieve a perfect performance in many movies.

Harrison Ford had wonderful performances in both Star Wars movies and Indiana Jones ones, but these would not have been possible without the talent of his stunt double named Vic Armstrong. Armstrong started his career as the double of Gregory Peck with the movie Arabesque in 1966, and continued collaborating with Richard Harris and Sean Connery. His talent was proven once again after working with Christopher Reeve on the Superman movies. It was only after these movies that he became the personal double of Harrison Ford, working with him on the first three Indiana Jones movies, as well as Blade Runner, Return of the Jedi and Witness.

5. Zoë Bell

Zoe Bell is trained in martial arts, which made her perfect for the role in Kill Bill.

Lastly, one of the truly amazing stunt doubles of famous actors, Zoë Bell started her career by studying dance and martial arts. She begun doing stunts in 1992 and ended up working on famous movies like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and TV series like Xena: Warrior Princess. However, her most popular gig remains the Kill Bill series, where she was originally simply a team member. However, someone saw her potential and thus she became Uma Thurman’s stunt double. For this role she studied the Wushu traditional fighting method for six weeks in China. Her more recent work includes The Hateful Eight, Death Proof and the Lost TV series.

Movie Flops: The Worst 5 Disney Movies List

December 10, 2015 By Fred Mitchell Leave a Comment

These days most movies are made with the purpose of feeding the viewers whatever is in trend. Some years ago, wizards were very popular thanks to Harry Potter. They were followed by knights and hobbits, vampires and werewolves, and now the most viewed motion pictures feature superheroes. As a result, unique and creative ideas do not have much space to develop and become successful. The biggest movie companies will always follow the interests of their audience. However, every now and then, they do release features with different themes, in order to test the market. More than often, these movies flop at the box office, be it kids movies, animated movies or live action motion pictures. Here is the worst Disney movies list, featuring items that barely covered their costs.

1. Prince of Persia

Prince of Persia is on the worst Disney movies list.

Year: 2010

Cost: $200m

Domestic gross: $90m

International gross: $244m

This movie was not a complete fail, if we take into consideration the amount of money it made by selling on DVD and Blu Ray. However, it didn’t become one of the highest grossing Disney movies as it was planned. In this case, the fans of the old video game seemed to prefer watching The Prince of Persia at home, in the same places they played the game so many years ago. Disney’s dreams of beginning a new franchise with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role turned to dust.

2. Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Sorcerer's Apprentice flopped at the box office despite featuring Nicolas Cage.

Year: 2010

Cost: $160m

Domestic gross: $63m

International gross: $152m

Among Nicolas Cage’s bad decisions for choosing roles was the Sorcerer’s Apprentice movie. Unfortunately, the Disney motion picture simply didn’t have substance and thus viewers and critics couldn’t connect with the characters or the action. It is a pity when you think that it is based on a beloved piece from the Fantasia Disney movie, a unique feature in the history of animation starring none other than Mickey Mouse. Perhaps if he would have been included, Mickey could have saved this movie.

3. John Carter

The worst Disney movies list includes John Carter.

Year: 2012

Cost: $250m

Domestic gross: $73m

International gross: $209m

Another item on the worst Disney movies list, John Carter stands as an example that a blockbuster’s recipe for success doesn’t stand in choosing less popular actors. Featuring Tailor Kitsch, this movie was based on a book written a long time ago, which younger audiences didn’t have a strong interest in. Of course, there are books released many years ago that were adored my teenagers nowadays, like The Lord of the Rings trilogy. However, before planning to spend a lot of money on a blockbuster, the producers should always carry on some research on the interests of people, no matter their age.

4. The Lone Ranger

Not even Johnny Depp could save The Lone Ranger.

Year: 2013

Cost: $215m

Domestic gross: $88m

International gross: $142m

Sometimes even a successful team cannot draw in as many viewers as they want to. With their previous blockbusters from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp were set to reach the top of the box office. Unfortunately, the western movie released in 2013 didn’t catch on with audiences. The most plausible reason is that the time of western movies has passed a long time ago, and it may take another couple of years before viewers will be interested in them again.

5. Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland is on the worst Disney movies list.

Year: 2015

Cost: $190m

Domestic gross: $94m

International gross: $115m

Last but not least on the worst Disney movies list is Tomorrowland. Directed by Brad Bird, who worked on the brilliant Ratatouille and The Incredibles, the movie lacked a strong storyline. Not even the spectacular visual effects could convince viewers that Tomorrowland was worth a shot. Similar to The Lone Ranger case, having a famous actor like George Clooney is not a guarantee that the earnings will cover the expenses. It is reported that an additional $150 million were invested by Disney for the marketing of the motion picture. But in the end the movie did not even come close to covering its costs, even if it was part of the family movies category and could be viewed by children as well.

You shouldn’t worry too much though. The Disney company faced some difficult years when it first begun, but now it has more than enough money to continue producing wonderful movies. Not to mention that it will probably get back all that it lost with the new Star Wars movie: The Force Awakens.

The Top 10 Superhero Movies

April 30, 2012 By Vernon Gadson Leave a Comment

In case you didn’t know (and how could you not?), superhero epic “Marvel’s The Avengers” sees its long-awaited theatrical release in American theatres this coming Friday, even though its UK release was last Thursday, when I went and saw it (if you will allow me to gloat and grin and dance merrily down the street for a moment or two). To celebrate, I thought I’d take a look at the ten finest examples to come out of the cinematic superhero genre, which I have listed below along with justifications for each entry. Some of the films are based on comics, some of them are original; some of them are straight-faced, some of them are comedies; some of them are bloody, one of them was made by Pixar. And hey, one of them might even have a certain Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Hulk in them (nudge, nudge). [Read more…]
