It is that time of the year again, when we patiently wait to see whether our favorite movies and movie makers have made it to being nominated at the Oscars. This is usually followed by a couple of disappointments. This year, the Oscars 2016 snubs include a couple of actors, directors and screenwriters, but also some motion pictures that deserved to be there instead of some unknown movies. Here are the biggest surprises we had when we heard the Oscars nominations announcement.
1. The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared
Some Oscars 2016 snubs happened because of the apparition of a completely unknown contender, as it happens each year. Based on a book that few have heard of, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared movie is nominated in the Makeup and Hairstyling category.
2. Creed
Although Sylvester Stallone received a well-deserved Golden Globe and might be on his way to win an Oscar, the rest of the cast and crew of Creed have been left in the dark. Many are wondering why director Ryan Coogler or Michael B. Jordan did not receive any nominations, as their work was crucial in the making of the Rocky homage movie.
3. Charlize Theron
Mad Max: Fury Road has an astounding amount of ten nominations at the 2016 Oscars. However, as the voters appreciated the visual effects, sound editing, makeup and hairstyling, costume and production design, cinematography and editing, they were not very impressed by the performance of Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa. At least, not as impressed as we viewers were. Unfortunately, many failed to see that the action-packed movie had more substance to it than just the action sequences and visuals, thus landing the actress among the Oscars 2016 snubs.
4. Idris Elba
The next one among the Oscars 2016 snubs is Idris Elba, who had a great chance at being nominated for his performance in Beasts of No Nation, a movie produced by Netflix. It was not meant to be, even though critics hailed Elba as being intense and titanic in his role as a warlord. The fact that he was completely ignored might have happened because of the conflict Netflix has with movie theaters. Many chains refused to show the movie because the company wanted to release it on the same date in both cinemas and on video on demand. The explanation could be that the older voters of the Academy simply think Netflix is a studio, or just do not understand it.
5. Aaron Sorkin
After winning a Golden Globe, everyone expected Aaron Sorkin to at least receive an Oscar nomination for the brilliant screenplay of the new Steve Jobs movie. However, he lost out in front of other screenwriters such as Ethan and Joel Coen, Matt Charman or Drew Goddard. On a brighter note, he did get nominated at the Writers Guild Awards.
6. Ridley Scott
The Oscars 2016 snubs list would not be complete without Ridley Scott, who did a wonderful job on The Martian. Even though many predicted he would get a nomination, we found out with surprise that this was not the case. Well, at least The Martian won Best Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes.
7. Carol
Quite possibly the most beautiful movie of last year, Carol did receive six nominations, for music, costume design, cinematography, screenplay, and the wonderful performances of Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. However, many of us also expected it to be taken into consideration for Best Picture and Best Director (Todd Haynes) too. In the light of the fact that the 2016 Oscars only have white nominees, Vanity Fair also pointed out that a movie about a gay love story might not be successful. Remember when Crash won instead of Brokeback Mountain? There you have it.
